Abstract |
Objective To determine the safety of carotid artery stenting (CAS) in elderly patients with severe carotid artery stenosis.
Methods The present study included 55 patients (62 arteries) who underwent CAS. The patients were divided into two groups according to age: patients in their 70s (n=47) and those in their 80s (n=15). Clinical and radiological results at follow-up; procedure-related complications; and the combined incidence of stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) and death within 30 days of CAS were retrospectively reviewed.
Results Technical success rate (96% vs. 93%) was similar between the two groups. Overall, the combined incidence of 30-day stroke, MI, and death rate was 3.2%. There was no significant difference between the septuagenarian and octogenarian group (4.3% and 0%, respectively, p=0.999). Although stroke rate and restenosis rate during follow-up was higher in the octogenarian group, there was no significant difference.
Conclusion The results of this study suggest that CAS is safe in elderly patients with severe carotid artery stenosis. However, additional clinical data are necessary. |
