Abstract |
Objective We investigated the patterns of treatment in the acute phase among different strokes in the elderly.
Methods Total 293 patients in the acute phase with severe ischemic (n=115) or hemorrhagic stroke (n=178) (initial Glasgow Coma Scale Score ≤10) were retrospectively reviewed. Thrombolysis in patients with ischemic stroke and decompressive surgery hemorrhagic stroke were respectively assessed according to the age of 65 years.
Results In the acute phase of severe ischemic stroke, intravenous or intra-arterial thrombolysis were performed in 8 (30.8%) of the young patients (<65 years) and 12 of elderly patients (≥65 years) (p=0.041). No thrombolysis treatments were not different between two groups. In the acute phase of severe hemorrhagic stroke, the patients received decompressive surgery were 24 (28.6%) in the young patients and were 15 (16.0%) in the elderly patients (p=0.042). On contrary to severe ischemic stroke, give-up of active treatment due to old age significantly higher in the elderly patients of severe hemorrhagic stroke (1.2% vs 8.8%, p=0.026).
Conclusion The patterns of treatment for the elderly in the acute phase among different strokes seems to be different from those of young patients. The factors affecting patterns in the acute treatment of acute strokes must be further investigated in the future. |
