Abstract |
Objective Time is a very important factor in determining the prognosis in the acute treatment for ischemic stroke. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between socioeconomic behaviors and the delay in arriving at hospital in Korean stroke patients.
Methods This study was carried out targeting 128 patients over age 65 who were admitted to emergency room in Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital due to acute stroke from May 2012 to February 2014. Depending on the time of rt-PA available, patients were divided into two groups: one group who arrives at the hospital within 3 hours and other group who arrives at the hospital after 3 hours. Whether there was a difference in two groups according to age, the number of risk factors, living patterns, income level, educational status, and the course of hospitalization was compared by performing Chi-square (c2) test.
Results Of the total 128 patients, there were 40 patients over age 65 and under age 70 (31.3%), 61 patients over 70 and under 80 (47.7%), and 27 patients over 80 (21.1%). According to the arrival time taken to the emergency room after the symptoms, there were 37 patients (28.9%) who arrived within 3 hours and 91 patients (71.1%) who arrived after 3 hours. The anaylsis identified patients with cerebral hemorrhage (vs. ischemia, χ2=6.099, p<0.05) and monthly income ≥3.00x106 kw (vs. <1.00x106, kw, χ2=7.576, p<0.05) as being associated with hospital arrival within 3 hours of symptom onset.
Conclusion According to the history of stroke and monthly income, there showed a significant difference of emergency department arrival rate within 3 hours in stroke patients. It is thought that there is a need for providing social insurance to and taking interest in and caring for the neglected low- income groups. |
