Abstract |
A 61-year-old woman diagnosed with glioblastoma of the posterior fossa underwent an operation for placement of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt due to obstructive hydrocephalus. While undergoing subsequent chemotherapy, she suffered from recurring pleural and pericardial effusions despite pericardiocentesis and pleural drainage. A consult requesting verification of VP shunt function was placed with our department, and we identified a kink in the catheter near the heart on a plain chest radiograph. In collaboration with the cardiac surgery team, we surgically removed and then reinserted the catheter. The operation was successful and the patient quickly recovered. The reason for migration of the catheter was unclear, however, we hypothesized that it may have been due to the initial deep pathway of catheter placement or the erosion of pericardial tissue. We report the first case of migration of the distal catheter of a VP shunt into the pericardium. |
