Abstract
Objective
Entering into an aging society, osteoporosis causing vertebral body fracture is substantial public health problem. In recent years, teriparatide have been used to improve osteoporosis. We have treated patients with osteoporotic vertebral body fracture with teriparatide. Because teriparatide treatment was effective than our think, we surveyed patients treated with teriparatide injection.
Methods
The records of 47 patients treated with teriparatide and 55 patients treated with risedronate in our hospital from January 2011 to December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients had one or multiple vertebral compression fracture. We investigated patients’ improvement degree of clinical symptoms (visual analogue scale [VAS], duration of taking medicines), age, and change of bone mineral density (BMD).
Results
There were no difference in patient’s age (p=0.74) and change of BMD (p=0.61) between teriparatide and risedronate. At 2 (p<0.00) and 3 months (p=0.02), VAS scores were significantly reduced in teriparatide group than in risedronate group. In duration of taking medicines, Ultracet tablet? (p<0.00) and IRcodon tablet? (p<0.00) were significantly reduced in teriparatide group than in risedrontae group.
Conclusion
In elderly patients with osteoporotic vertebral body fracture, teriparatide is one of good treatment option to reduce pain effectively and lower risk of side effect of taking medicine.
