Abstract |
Objective Chronic subdural hematoma (C-SDH) is a common clinical disease and more common in geriatric population. The purpose of this study
is to investigate the differences in clinical features according to age and compared variable factors.
Methods Between January 2007 and December 2010, 115 patients has undergone burr hole trephination for C-SDH. We classified them into two
groups by patients’ age (≤65years, >65years). We investigated the history of head injury, underlying medical conditions, neurologic symptoms,
Glasgow Coma Scale, Markwalder clinical grade, preoperative computed tomography findings, morbidity, mortality, Glasgow Outcome Scale, and
recurrence. And we compared these factors between the two age groups for statistical significance.
Results Younger age group included 37 patients (33.2%) and older age group included 78 patients (67.8%). Trauma is major cause in each age group.
Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke, dementia, antiplatelet agent were significantly associated with older age group. Surgical outcome was no statis
tical significance.
Conclusion In older patients, clinician should note underlying disease and plan proper management. |
