Abstract |
Objective The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between causative factors of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) such as age, head trauma, antiplatelet medication, and radiologic findings.
Methods A retrospective study was done on 94 patients, who had a burr-hole craniotomy for unilateral CSDH from 2008 to 2012. The clinical data of the patients were collected by medical records and radiographic evaluation and statistical analysis performed with the SPSS.
Results With aging, preoperative and postoperative hematoma thickness increased significantly and a longer period between trauma and admission day led to an increase in the preoperative and postoperative midline shift and preoperative hematoma thickness. Antiplatelet medication and trauma history did not affect the radiological findings. And Hounsfield unit (HU) was not related to the interval period or causative factors.
Conclusion CSDH is a common disease in elderly patients. While many studies have explored the association between CSDH and recurrence, not enough studies have been conducted on the relationship between causative factors and radiologic findings. In our study, we find that the age and interval period between trauma and admission day were the most important factors influencing preoperative hematoma thickness. And the interval period also influenced the midline shift. |
